In a return to painting in response to the landscape I traveled to my brothers Garden in Monmouthshire in Wales. I worked at the side of a lake that is edged with mature trees. The heavy skirts of the trees, brush and hover above the water. The red earth, light, weather and tree branches are reflected in its still surface. These are my muse at present. This damp, earthy and draughty space is refreshingly solitary and quiet. Yet working from Nature is by no means romantic. It’s physical, mucky and uncomfortable and I would not have it any other way. It is this transitory and physical engagement that I love and endeavour to capture in the work
